RECONSTRUCTING MEANING THROUGH TEXT, EMOJI, AND IMAGES OF INSTAGRAM COMMUNICATION : CYBERPRAGMATIC STUDY

Instagram posts produce pragmatic meaning through the interaction of captions, emoji, and images, rather than through written text alone. Purpose: This qualitative pilot investigates how these resources jointly cue context, support inferential enrichment, and project communicative intentions. Method: Thirty caption–emoji–image records were purposively selected from the publicly accessible English-language #UT-Insta demonstration archive. Indonesian paraphrases and visual descriptions were coded for cross-modal relations and tentative speech-act functions. Results: Thirteen records were classified as reinforcement (43.3%), eight as completion (26.7%), four as visual clarification (13.3%), and five as contextualization, contrast, irony, or loose association (16.7% combined). The analysis identifies affective alignment, reference resolution, humor, affiliative positioning, and commercial prompting as recurring inferential effects. Conclusion: Emoji and imagery operate as contextual cues that can confirm, extend, or redirect caption interpretation; their contribution is contingent on local context rather than fixed symbolic meaning. This is an exploratory analysis of archived samples, not a representative survey of Instagram. Original account identifiers and posting dates are unavailable, Indonesian captions are analytical paraphrases, and no inter-coder reliability or audience-response test is claimed.

Purpose: This qualitative pilot investigates how these resources jointly cue context, support inferential enrichment, and project communicative intentions.
