THERMAL PERFORMANCE OF DIFFERENT HEAT SINK FIN GEOMETRIES: A REVIEW

The fin shape is a significant design parameter of air-cooled heat sinks since it influences concurrently the heat transfer area, the boundary layer behavior and the pressure drop . The current research investigates the performance of plate, pin, wavy, folding, perforated and twisted fins in relation to typical indicators like temperature, heat transfer coefficient, thermal resistance, pressure drop and performance evaluation criteria (PEC). The mechanisms of each geometry are outlined and the sample numerical and experimental investigations are tabulated with the operating circumstances and the observed improvements mentioned against their own baselines. The comparison demonstrates that no shape is the best in all scenarios. Gains in heat transfer are always accompanied by increased flow resistance or decreased fin conduction and findings rely greatly on the mode of convection and the baseline. Research Gaps Common benchmark conditions Direct comparison of many geometries Combined impact of perforations and shapes Standardized PEC reporting.

Abstract

The current research investigates the performance of plate, pin, wavy, folding, perforated and twisted fins in relation to typical indicators like temperature, heat transfer coefficient, thermal resistance, pressure drop and performance evaluation criteria (PEC).
