Implementación de huertos agroecológicos escolares y familiares como herramienta pedagógica en centros educativos rurales de Nicaragua y Guatemala

This study analyzes the pedagogical impact of agroecological gardens as an educational tool in selected rural Schools in Nicaragua and Guatemala, considering the methodologies and experiences of the participants. The research was carried out at the Jaxnaq´tzal Man Kye Ajxnaq´tzal Bilingual Intercultural Normal School, in San Juan Ostuncalco, Guatemala, and Augusto César Sandino Institute, Never Oporta, Nicaragua, during the period 2020-2021. The study was qualitative, cross-sectional, documentary and field-based, based on a combination of the phenomenological method and action research, with a non-experimental design. The total sample of the study was 349 students. Four virtual workshops were held on key topics such as soil health, plants, families and food sovereignty, complemented by direct visits and the use of digital tools for monitoring and training in the construction of gardens. Students acquired practical, theoretical and attitudinal skills that promoted positive changes in their diet, nutrition, family and community economy. In addition, these gardens reinforced the availability of fresh and healthy food, encouraged the learning of sustainable agroecological practices and linked education with food security and sustainable development. The project aims to integrate agroecological gardens into the educational system, promoting a pedagogical model that connects theory with practice, fosters social equity and strengthens community empowerment. This initiative seeks to merge education and agroecology to benefit students and their communities, contributing to the integral development of rural areas and the strengthening of food sovereignty in Nicaragua and Guatemala.
