Bridging Smart Factory and Industry 5.0: A MAPE-K Autonomic Intralogistics Mobile Robot

Smart Factory paradigms focus on Flexibility, Adaptability, and Digitization, while Industry 5.0 introduces broader systemic priorities focused on Human-Centricity, Sustainability, and Resilience. Although various enabling technologies exist, current literature demonstrates that these six dimensions are typically addressed in a fragmented manner, with limited evidence of their integration within a common experimentally evaluated physical platform. This study investigates autonomic computing as an integrative approach for internal logistics by designing and implementing a MAPE-K-based autonomic Lift Truck platform that incorporates the complete set of Self-CHOP capabilities. Combining a structured literature review with physical development and experimental validation in a frugal Smart Factory, the research evaluates the system across all self-management functions. The experimental results confirm the operation of the four Self-CHOP capabilities. Self-Configuration combines RRT-based frontier exploration with successful navigation toward changing destination locations. Self-Healing detects mobility faults caused by obstructions through odometry–LiDAR divergence and initiates operator-assisted recovery. Self-Optimization adjusts robot speed to queued orders, revealing demand-dependent trade-offs in energy consumption and task-completion time compared with three fixed-speed strategies. Finally, Self-Protection provides collision avoidance along with encrypted Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) digital communications. These findings demonstrate the feasibility of integrating complementary self-management mechanisms within a single cyber–physical mobile platform and provide proof-of-concept operational support for Smart Factory characteristics and Industry 5.0-oriented objectives.
