Micro‐Interactions in Elementary Classrooms That Support Queer Literacies

ABSTRACT Elementary classrooms play a prominent role in foundational literacy skills, but texts used frequently marginalize diverse groups, including those in the LGBTQ+ community. This practitioner inquiry examines how micro‐interactions, or brief, everyday interactions, promote queer literacies in multiple content areas, including mathematics, reading, and social studies. Through three vignettes, students use correct pronouns and recognize diverse family dynamics, resulting in active learning and shared discourse. Data from discussion, writing, and partner reflections reveal micro‐interactions advance literacy growth and social awareness as students validate identities within texts. Findings show that micro‐interactions challenge norms, facilitating equitable representation in inclusive elementary classrooms. This practitioner inquiry gives teacher's direction for including micro‐interactions without completely revising the curriculum, illustrating focused reflection practices can manifest a collective learning space where students feel heard and affirmed.
