Perawatan Operkulektomi dengan Teknik Konvensional Menggunakan Scalpel Pada Kasus Perikoronitis Kronis Gigi 38: Laporan Kasus
Pericoronitis is an inflammatory condition of the soft tissues surrounding a partially erupted or impacted mandibular third molar. It is characterized by pain, swelling, recurrent inflammation, and discomfort due to food retention beneath the operculum. This case report aimed to describe the management of chronic pericoronitis associated with tooth 38 using a surgical operculectomy approach. A 23-year-old female patient presented with a gingival flap covering the linguo-occlusal surface of tooth 38, frequent food impaction, and recurrent pain caused by occlusal trauma. Clinical and radiographic examinations established a diagnosis of chronic pericoronitis associated with a fully erupted mandibular third molar in a Class 1A vertical position. Initial therapy consisted of oral hygiene instruction and scaling. Definitive treatment was performed through operculectomy using a No. 15 scalpel blade, followed by irrigation, placement of a periodontal dressing, and postoperative medication. Follow-up evaluations at one week and one month demonstrated satisfactory wound healing, absence of inflammatory signs, reduction in probing depth, improvement in gingival contour, and no recurrence of symptoms. Scalpel operculectomy is an effective, simple, and economical treatment option for chronic pericoronitis in cases with adequate eruption space and favorable tooth position, resulting in optimal periodontal healing and improved patient comfort.
