ANALISIS PROSES BERPIKIR KRITIS SISWA DALAM MENYELESAIKAN SOAL CERITA DI SMPK SANTA MARIA ASSUMPTA KUPANG

The main problem in this study is the suboptimal critical thinking process of students in solving mathematical story problems, which is characterized by the tendency of students to only memorize formulas without understanding the concept, difficulty in transforming verbal information into mathematical models, and a lack of looking back activity on the final answer, as found in initial observations in class VIII-D SMPK Santa Maria Assumpta Kupang. This study aims to describe the critical thinking process of these students in solving mathematical story problems on number patterns based on indicators of interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and inference. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach with three students as research subjects selected through purposive sampling based on their activeness and communication skills. Data were collected through written tests in the form of mathematical story problems and semi-structured interviews, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model after being tested for validity through technical and time triangulation. The results of the study indicate that the students' critical thinking process is suboptimal; although at the interpretation stage the subjects were able to identify information correctly, at the analysis stage the students experienced major obstacles in transforming verbal information into formal mathematical models, made calculation errors at the evaluation stage, and failed to provide accurate inferences due to the lack of a rechecking process. Thus, it can be concluded that students' critical thinking skills are still weak, particularly in the areas of analysis, evaluation, and inference. Therefore, learning interventions that emphasize comprehensive conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills are needed.
