Sustainable Smart Cities
The overarching goal of the research is to develop and suggest the most suitable urban environment for fostering the dynamic interactions required to undertake sustainable and adaptive smart city projects with the aim of boosting the natural environment's overall quality. To answer the distinct research topics, specific research methods, including a performance indicator approach and a literature analysis, were employed. Johannesburg's Smart City status is monitored, and how this adds to environmental sustainability at the city level is analysed. Global precedents demonstrate a clear association between smart city implementations and the improvement of environmental sustainability, notwithstanding the persistence of environmental challenges in the City of Johannesburg. The study demonstrates that smart city efforts applied to all city operations contribute to the improvement of resource efficiency within a city. This eventually enhances the environmental performance, quality, liveability, and sustainability of the urban landscape. To achieve this, the Smart City level of a city must be assessed and analysed to establish a baseline backed by current data in order to best guide an integrated planning and execution strategy. Smart city technologies and implementations lay the stage for the possibility of substantial environmental sustainability advances.
