Monitoring research impact and Open Science practices in the SciLifeLab research infrastructure with OpenAIRE

SciLifeLab (Science for Life Laboratory), Sweden's national infrastructure for life science research, actively supports the implementation of Sweden's national guidelines for Open Science (OS), aiming to make publicly funded research outputs openly accessible by 2026. As a signatory of CoARA, SciLifeLab also contributes to national and international efforts to reform research assessment, promoting more transparent, contextualised, and responsible use of metrics and indicators. This policy context creates a need to move beyond fragmented and largely manual tracking practices towards a more systematic, transparent, and evidence-informed approach to monitoring research impact and the uptake of OS practices. Understanding how research outputs connect and are reused is essential for informing institutional strategy and demonstrating scientific value. In collaboration with OpenAIRE, the European infrastructure for open scholarly communication, SciLifeLab co-designed the OS Monitor (http://scilifelab.openaire.eu). Leveraging the OpenAIRE Graph, the platform offers a customised environment for tracking and analysing SciLifeLab-related research outputs. Through an iterative co-creation process, the partners defined relevant output categories, relationships, and monitoring indicators. The OpenAIRE automated data mining, a critical component of the monitor, identifies publications by SciLifeLab-affiliated researchers, acknowledges use of SciLifeLab technologies, links publications to underlying datasets and software, and detects Data Availability Statements. The mined data is displayed via Monitor indicators, providing insight into the SciLifeLab research landscape and monitoring of OS practices in line with initiatives like CoARA and the Swedish guidelines. This presentation explores how this co-creative process between SciLifeLab and OpenAIRE makes Open Science practices measurable, visible, and recognised.
