Team Cognition Under Extreme Time Pressure: A Dynamic Communication Analysis of the US Airways Flight 1549 Emergency

Expert teams coordinate under extreme time pressure, yet it remains hard to quantify how their communication reorganizes and what cognition drives that reorganization. Communication analysis characterizes what teams say. Newer temporal methods characterize how that talk is organized in time. The two are rarely joined, and the cognitive dynamics of a real emergency with a successful outcome remain unmeasured. We applied a six-category content typology and a four-component expert-decision model to the cockpit voice recorder transcript of US Airways Flight 1549 (the 2009 Miracle on the Hudson), reliably coding 276 statements (1,982 words) across six flight phases, and characterized reorganization with lag-sequential analysis, entropy, and burstiness. During the 213-second emergency, factual (36.84%) and action (27.63%) statements dominated and non-task talk vanished; attention (43.42%) and alternatives (22.37%) led the cognitive categories. Pace more than doubled (0.99 to 2.41 words per second), communication shifted from clustered to near-continuous (burstiness +0.36 to −0.06), and sequential dependencies tightened (conditional entropy 1.93 to 1.83 bits) as acknowledgment-anchored checklist loops gave way to uncertainty-to-factual and action-to-uncertainty cycling. The study characterizes the communication and cognitive dynamics of one crisis with a successful outcome, integrating content and temporal-dynamic measures with an explicit expert-decision model.
