What happens when eastern and western Genji fireflies are mixed? An individual-based model decomposing flash period into genetic, thermal and entrainment components (Version v3.0.0)
[This data contains both English and Japanese preprint versions (Version 3.0.0) of the individual-based model predicting flash period dynamics when mixing eastern and western Genji fireflies.] ■ AbstractThe flash interval of synchronously flashing male Genji fireflies (Nipponoluciola cruciata) differs geographically, at about 4 s in eastern Japan and about 2 s in western Japan. Whether this difference is genetic, or arises from temperature or entrainment within groups, remains unresolved, and, to the best of the author’s knowledge, no study has examined what happens when eastern and western individuals are mixed in the same place. This paper proposes, as a hypothesis-driven concept proposal, an individual-based model in which the observed flash period is a composite of genetic component × temperature × entrainment to neighbours, combined with mate preference, hybrid fitness, inbreeding depression and heterosis, spatial structure and population dynamics. ■ Model PredictionsUnder the model’s assumptions, the simulations predict that:(1) When mates are chosen on the flash alone, entrainment strength κ is equivalent to widening the preference width σ by a factor of 1/(1 − κ) (Discovery of Equivalence).(2) With a tolerance fixed in seconds, higher temperature promotes the mixing of lineages.(3) When all individuals are mixed from the start, narrow preferences lead to the loss of lineages whereas wide preferences retain all three lineages and lead to fusion, while lineages that start spatially separated (a contact zone) coexisted for 80 generations.(4) A small lineage that would go extinct alone because of inbreeding depression persisted, as genes within an admixed population, only when it was mixed into the same sites as large lineages under wide preferences and a low hybrid cost. These are assumption-dependent predictions, and calibration against empirical values is not yet done. As top-priority tasks we propose calibration with prior work on mate preference (Tamura et al. 2005) and validation experiments in captivity.
