Defence Readiness: how to measure it across industrial ecosystems and how it has been impacted by the War in Ukraine

This repository contains the files required to build the Category Spaces analysed in the article “Defence Readiness: how to measure it across industrial ecosystems and how it has been impacted by the War in Ukraine”. The repository includes: Trade data: bilateral trade flows at the HS 6-digit level (HS12 nomenclature) taken from the BACI database (CEPII), together with the country code correspondence table used to convert numeric country codes into ISO3. Classification file (codes_ML_HS.xlsx): the descriptions of the Military Lines (sheet ML_extended) and of the Harmonized System codes (sheet HSfull), used to link defence-related categories with HS product codes. R script: the code used to process the trade data, compute the semantic similarity between ML and HS descriptions (sentence embeddings, cosine similarity) and generate the resulting network representations. Running the script with these files reproduces the Category Space analysed in the paper. Please refer to the original source for its terms of use.
