Audience Perception of Aesthetic Elements and Viewing Experience of Big Brother Naija Reality Television Show
Understanding audience perceptions of production aesthetics is important for examining engagement with reality television. This study investigated audience exposure to aesthetic elements, perceptions of production quality, and the relationship between these elements and the viewing experience of Big Brother Naija Season 8 in Taraba State, Nigeria. The study drew on perception theory, aesthetic hedonism, and objectivist and subjectivist perspectives. A survey design was employed, with data collected from audience members who had watched the programme using a structured questionnaire with a five-point Likert scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Respondents reported high exposure to the programme’s aesthetic elements and generally positive perceptions of its production quality. Sonic aesthetics, particularly music, were reported as the most influential production component. However, the reported weighted mean for music (5.05) exceeded the stated five-point scale, requiring verification before this ranking can be confirmed. The findings further linked the integration of aesthetic elements with emotional engagement, psychological immersion, entertainment satisfaction, and the overall viewing experience. These relationships support the relevance of applied media aesthetics, particularly the proposition that coordinated production elements can intensify and clarify audience experiences. The study concludes that aesthetic quality is an important consideration in audience appreciation of reality television, while the survey findings warrant interpretation in terms of associations. By providing evidence from audiences in Taraba State, the study contributes to understanding how production aesthetics relate to viewers’ experiences. Further research across age groups, educational backgrounds, and geographical settings is recommended to assess the broader applicability of these findings.
