Autismo na vida adulta e direito à saúde: os desafios jurídicos para a continuidade do cuidado após a infância e a adolescência

Attention to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has historically prioritized childhood, creating a gap in care and regulatory support after the age of majority, even though the condition persists throughout the life course. Given this scenario, this study analyzes the legal and institutional barriers to ensuring the continuity of comprehensive care and the autonomy of adults with autism. Using a qualitative and deductive methodology based on bibliographic and documentary research, the study examines supported decision-making, contractual refusals of treatment, and family burnout. It finds that the suspension of care at age eighteen constitutes a discriminatory administrative disruption lacking clinical justification, requiring the urgent consolidation of intersectoral public policies.
