PENERAPAN MODEL PEMBELAJARAN RADEC UNTUK MENINGKATKAN STUDENT ENGAGEMENT PESERTA DIDIK KELAS V SEKOLAH DASAR

Student engagement is an important aspect in supporting students’ involvement throughout the learning process. However, the results of an initial non-cognitive diagnostic assessment indicated that the engagement of fifth-grade elementary school students was not yet optimal, as evidenced by, among other factors, their low willingness to ask questions when they did not understand the learning material. This study aimed to improve students’ engagement through the implementation of the RADEC (Read, Answer, Discuss, Explain, Create) learning model. This study employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) using the Kemmis and McTaggart model, which was conducted in three cycles consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The subjects were 29 fifth-grade students at SDN Mojoroto 1. Data on student engagement were collected using a 4-point Likert-scale questionnaire covering four aspects: skills engagement, emotional engagement, participation/interaction engagement, and performance engagement. The results showed that the average student engagement increased gradually from 3.24 in Cycle I to 3.30 in Cycle II and reached 3.43 in Cycle III. Improvements were also observed across all aspects of student engagement, with the greatest increase occurring in participation/interaction engagement, which rose from 2.92 in Cycle I to 3.19 in Cycle III. These findings indicate that the implementation of the RADEC learning model was associated with positive development in students’ engagement throughout the intervention. The research success criterion was achieved in Cycle II, while the improvement was maintained and further strengthened in Cycle III. Therefore, the RADEC learning model can serve as an alternative instructional approach to support the improvement of student engagement among elementary school students, provided that its implementation is adapted to students’ characteristics and the learning context.
