Development of a new competency-based curriculum for postgraduate medical education in biochemistry initiated by the National Medical Commission, Government of India

Objectives To document and appraise the process followed by the expert committee appointed by the National Medical Commission (NMC), for finalizing the guidelines for the new competency-based curriculum (CBC) for Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Biochemistry, and describe its genesis, salient features, and unique attributes. Material and Methods The expert committee constituted by the NMC reviewed the existing PGME curriculum in Biochemistry and identified gaps between discipline-based curriculum design and competencies expected of postgraduate medical graduates. The committee formulated a competency-based framework integrating knowledge, skills, with emphasis on competencies relevant to laboratory medicine, teaching, research, and professional practice. Results The new competency-based curriculum shifts emphasis from acquisition of knowledge towards attainment and demonstration of clearly defined competencies. It provides a structured framework for competency-based learning, teaching, and assessment in MD Biochemistry in India. The curriculum incorporates distinctive features intended to promote meaningful learning and development of competencies required for clinical practice, teaching, research, and professional development. The major features and differences from the previous curriculum are highlighted. Conclusion The competency-based curriculum for MD Biochemistry represents a transition from a predominantly knowledge-oriented and discipline-based approach towards competency-based postgraduate medical education. By defining expected competencies and aligning learning and assessment with these competencies, the curriculum aims to improve the quality and relevance of postgraduate education and prepare medical graduates for roles as competent medical biochemists, teachers, researchers, and healthcare professionals.
