Competition Law as a Guiding Discipline for the Digital Economy: Submissions for the 4th Early Career Scholars' Conference in Competition Law

This compilation of the working papers brings together submissions by early-career scholars (ECRs) for the 4th annual young scholars conference “Competition Law as a Guiding Discipline for the Digital Economy”, co-organised by the University of Glasgow/CREATe in collaboration with the University College London and the University of Vienna. The key questions that the ECRs were asked in preparation for the conference were: “How can competition law meaningfully support contemporary markets considering recent economic and technological changes, while using ‘out-of-the-box’ thinking? More specifically, how can this field of law foster and guide effective multidisciplinary approaches to regulate digital space for the benefit of wider society?” The resulting academic papers tackle these questions from different perspectives, considering a variety of topics such as the relationship of competition law with the (digital) press and media sector; the role of competition law in ensuring openness, accessibility and competitiveness of markets and ecosystems in the age of AI; involvement of competition law in the design and operation of regulatory sandboxes; and deploying conventional and non-conventional (enforcement) tools to support competition law analysis for the robustness of digital markets. While still works in progress, these papers offer interesting and diverse viewpoints, contributing to a wider academic debate on how best to utilise competition law in a ‘non-traditional’ way to further foster the digital economy.

While still works in progress, these papers offer interesting and diverse viewpoints, contributing to a wider academic debate on how best to utilise competition law in a ‘non-traditional’ way to further foster the digital economy.
