Teaching, Skills Development, and Industry Alignment in TVET: Strategies for Effectiveness

Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions play a critical role in equipping students with practical skills and competencies required for the labour market. However, concerns regarding the quality and employability of TVET graduates continue to raise important questions about the effectiveness of current teaching and learning strategies. This paper explores the key strategies employed by TVET institutions to produce high-quality graduates who are both competent and industry ready. Grounded in a qualitative interpretivist approach, the paper draws on institutional practices, educator perspectives, and student experiences to examine how teaching methodologies, curriculum design, and industry partnerships contribute to student development. The findings highlighted several critical strategies, including the integration of work-integrated learning, competency-based training, continuous curriculum review aligned with industry needs, and the use of experiential and practical learning approaches. Additionally, the role of lecturer capacity development, mentorship, and student support systems emerges as central to enhancing learning outcomes. The paper further reveals that strong collaboration between TVET institutions and industry stakeholders significantly improves the relevance and quality of training, thereby increasing graduate employability. However, challenges such as limited resources, outdated equipment, and gaps in institutional support continue to hinder optimal implementation. It concludes by recommending strengthened industry linkages, investment in infrastructure, and the adoption of innovative, student-centred pedagogies to enhance the quality of TVET education.
