A Friend Asked: Essays on Self-as-an-End, Volume I / 有朋友问:SAE随笔集·卷一
A Friend Asked: Essays on Self-as-an-End, Volume I: From Instrumentalization to Self-as-an-End is a collection of applied-philosophy essays that begins with ordinary questions. This volume contains the general preface and sixty-five essays, arranged in the order in which they were originally written and organized into four parts: “Learning to Judge,” “The Expansion of Instrumentalization,” “The Person as an End,” and “The Framework Enters the World.” Beginning with questions about risk, technology, finance, platforms, and popular culture, the essays gradually develop the central concern of Self-as-an-End (SAE): how people can resist treating themselves and others merely as instruments within institutions, technologies, and inherited narratives. Volume I records not the triumphant completion of a theory, but the way a concern grew out of concrete questions and began to submit itself to the test of reality. This is a bilingual Zenodo record. The same DOI contains corresponding Chinese- and English-language PDFs. Essay numbers and hidden stable source IDs match across the two editions. The Chinese and English Markdown manuscripts may also be uploaded as source files or retained privately by the author.
