A Common Conditionable Space Medium? Phase-Conditioned Persistence and Passage–Readout Sequences in Cloud Chambers, Hau's Coherent Optical Storage, and the NGC 628 Spiral Galaxy
Three physically dissimilar systems—a supersaturated-vapor cloud chamber, an ultracold atomic mediumused for coherent optical storage, and the spiral galaxy NGC 628—can be analyzed in terms of an earlierpassage or preparation, an intermediate conditioned state, and a later observable readout. Neither chambervapor, a Bose–Einstein condensate, nor interstellar hydrogen is an ordinary material common to all three. This paper asks whether that absence of a shared ordinary material makes a common conditionable spacemedium a logically motivated candidate explanation. We argue that it does motivate a testable unificationhypothesis, while emphasizing that a shared causal sequence is not evidence by itself for a sharedsubstance: ionization, atomic coherence, and galactic dynamics already provide distinct establishedmechanisms.SP3 proposes that space contains a physical medium whose phase organization and response propertiescan be conditioned by matter and energy, persist for a finite interval, and influence subsequent interactions.Matter itself is hypothesized to be a persistent, permitted energy–medium phase organization. Historicalcontext is supplied by Faraday’s lines of force, Maxwell’s unification of electromagnetic phenomena, andSP3 common-medium hypothesis • Beecham • 2Einstein’s 1920 Leiden discussion of physically endowed space, without treating any of these asexperimental endorsement of SP3. Modern quantum-field vacuum states are also distinguished from aliteral empty nothingness. The documented NGC 628 pilot used SINGS DR4 I-band and continuum-subtracted Hα FITS images, reconstructed upstream stellar sectors at six fixed elapsed times, and compared associations using threecontrol strategies. The largest exploratory contrast was reported at 5 Myr, with reduced association atlonger windows; the exact optimum was not a prior quantitative prediction, the pilot preceded freezing ofthe expanded multi-galaxy protocol, and neither helium-line results nor a direct measurement of mediumstiffness was reported. We formulate the common-medium hypothesis, distinguish it from generic memorydynamics, and specify cross-scale tests capable of discriminating SP3 from established physicalexplanations.
