Remote Technologies, Dynamic Capabilities, and the Post-COVID Survival of Nigerian SMEs: Evidence from Owner-Managers

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed deep structural vulnerabilities among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), particularly in emerging economies such as Nigeria. While many SMEs adopted digital tools during the crisis, limited empirical evidence explains how remote technologies have been strategically integrated to sustain long-term competitiveness post-pandemic. This study explores the crucial roles of remote technologies in enabling SME survival in Nigeria’s evolving business ecosystem. Adopting a qualitative exploratory design, 18 semi-structured interviews were conducted with SME owner-managers across Lagos, Ogun, and Abuja. The data were thematically analysed using Braun and Clarke’s (2006) six-phase framework, guided by the Resource-Based View (RBV) and Dynamic Capabilities Theory (DCT). Findings reveal three core pathways: remote technologies as valuable, inimitable resources enhancing efficiency and market reach (RBV); dynamic capabilities enabling SMEs to sense, seize, and reconfigure digital opportunities (DCT); and integrated digital ecosystems supporting resilience and business model innovation. The study recommends strategic digital integration, staff digital upskilling, and supportive policy frameworks to enhance SME digital maturity. It contributes original, context-specific evidence on how RBV and DCT jointly explain the role of remote technologies in strengthening SME resilience and competitiveness in post-COVID Nigeria.
