Obesity and Blood Pressure in Relation to Serum hs-CRP in Type II Diabetes Mellitus

Background: The patients with type II diabetes mellitus have modifiable risk factors, including obesity and elevated blood pressure. A reliable indicator of coronary heart disease, CVD in type II diabetes is serum hs-CRP, a marker of persistent low grade inflammation. The necessity to identify possible risks in these patients is of the utmost importance. The study was undertaken to observe the measures of obesity and blood pressure in relation to serum hs-CRP in type II DM. Materials and Methods: An observational study was carried out from January 2016 to December 2016 in the Outpatient Department of Endocrinology and Department of Biochemistry, Chittagong Medical College. By using non-probability consecutive sampling, total 126 participants with type II DM were enrolled in this study. BMI was calculated, and waist circumference was measured to determine central obesity. Plasma glucose and serum hs-CRP were estimated. Results: Serum hs-CRP was significantly associated with measures of obesity such as waist circumference (OR = 13.54, p = 0.0001) and body mass index (OR = 4.71, p = 0.046) in type II DM. Moreover, serum hs-CRP in the upper tertile compared with the lower two tertiles resulted in an odds' ratio of 7.13 for increased BP which was statistically significant, p = 0.0006. In addition, serum hs-CRP was positively correlated with systolic (r = + 0.64) and diastolic (r = + 0.62) blood pressure in type II DM. Conclusion: Obesity and increased BP was well associated and positively correlated with serum hs-CRP in type II DM. Controlling body weight and blood pressure may reduce the chance of an increase in serum hs-CRP and aid these patients experience fewer deaths from CVD and Coronary heart disease.
