A data-driven framework for understanding the emergent structural biology community in Africa
This White Paper reflects on the current state and future development of structural biology research capacities across Africa, with a particular focus on the emergence of a scientific community in this field. Drawing on perspectives from the history and sociology of science, it considers the rationale for systematically mapping this community, taking into account not only its size and composition but also its expertise, institutional relationships, scientific networks and collective capabilities. It discusses how community mapping could support BioStruct-Africa in understanding the reach and impact of its activities, identifying emerging needs and opportunities, and building a longitudinal perspective on the community's development. More broadly, the White Paper makes the case for accompanying and documenting this process as it unfolds, rather than relying primarily on retrospective accounts.
