A büntetőeljárásokat gyorsítani nem kell félnetek jó lesz...

Speeding up criminal proceedings has been a recurring criminal policy demand for decades, and in the autumn of 2026 it once again became a codification task. At the same time, international comparative indicators point to serious rule-of-law deficiencies in the operation of the Hungarian criminal justice system. The study examines how proceedings can be accelerated while the guarantees are strengthened. According to the statistics of the prosecution service, the main cause of delay is the length of the investigation, not the court stage. It was in 2025 that the legislature raised the maximum duration of the investigation, from 2.5 years to as much as 4.5 years. In order to accelerate proceedings, the study therefore proposes strengthening the capacity of specialised investigators and supporting it with information technology, the wide-ranging application of enforceable time limits binding on the authorities, a substantial increase in the value thresholds of economic offences, and an amendment of the rules on the taking of evidence.
