Lived Experiences of Special Education Teachers in Applying Positive Reinforcement Strategies
This descriptive phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of seven Filipino Special Education teachers applying positive reinforcement at Rising Star SPED Academy in Hayward, California. Semi-structured interview accounts were analyzed through Colaizzi’s seven-step method. The completed analysis identified 119 Significant Statements, 119 corresponding Formulated Meanings, and eleven finalized Theme Clusters. Participants described reinforcement as individualized, structured but adjustable, and dependent on student interests, needs, classroom expectations, timing, pacing, assistance, and changing responses. Their experiences included observation, trial and error, reflection, consultation, and collaboration across professional and family contexts. Teachers attributed meaning to encouragement, recognition of effort, rapport, emerging skills, and student strengths, alongside practical challenges and variable responses. Reports concerning learner behavior, confidence, engagement, self-regulation, communication, and social interaction were teacher-perceived, not independently measured outcomes. All seven participants confirmed the finalized Fundamental Structure. The findings informed the proposed Responsive Positive Reinforcement Practice Framework for Special Education, a recursive guide for reflective decisions and coordinated support. This researcher-developed framework has not been tested for feasibility or effectiveness.
