LINGUOCULTURAL ANALYSIS OF THE MULTICOMPONENTAL ATTENTION-ATTRACTING POSITION IN THE TRANSLATION OF ENGLISH NEWS HEADLINES INTO UKRAINIAN

The aim of this study is to conduct a linguocultural, and translation analysis of the multicomponent attention-attracting position of BBC News headlines throughout 2020–2026. The novelty of this study lies in the fact that attention-attracting positions in English-language headlines on the BBC News website may encompass four or more components, which are rendered in Ukrainian translations using one to seven components, depending on the translation operations employed, the target audience’s worldview as well as stylistic or rhetorical considerations. Four components in the original are usually rendered as one in the translation when separate components are omitted, the perspective of information presentation is changed, or an agent is introduced; as two — when a topic classifier or some proper nouns unknown to the target audience are omitted, or when individual components are retained; three — if one component is moved to a different position in the headline; four — if an equivalent translation is used or meaning of a component is specified; five or more — if the word order is changed or a quote of a celebrity is included. Five components in the original are usually rendered as one, two or even three in the translation when certain components with different semantics are omitted or generalized; as four — when transposition is used or combined with addition; as five — when equivalence, specification, or a combination of these with the omission of components occurs; six or more — in cases of specifying the meaning of components or addition. Six or seven components in the original are usually rendered as four, five, six or even seven in the translation when the perspective of presenting information changes, which may also be used to render only a few components. Prospects for further research entail studying multicomponentness in both attention-keeping and nudging positions of the English and Ukrainian headlines from a translation perspective.
