Leading Beyond Boundaries: Tenacity, Vulnerability, and Resilience in Teacher Leadership

This report shares the findings of a single-participant oral history conducted in western Canada with a prominent teacher leader who co-founded a long-running school–community partnership initiative. The primary research question was: How is teacher leadership conceptualized and enacted, and what are the implications for educational stakeholders? The secondary research question was: What are the values, beliefs, and assumptions underpinning teacher leadership discourses? Study findings offered a cautionary perspective to idealized descriptions of teacher leadership. The teacher leader reported strong satisfaction from her work, but she also faced professional and emotional costs of unanticipated challenges. She addressed professional tensions by pursuing graduate studies that led to a master’s degree and a PhD. While recognizing the limits of a single-participant study and avoiding overextrapolation, the study findings suggest that researchers and professional development designers might consider questions about (1) personal leadership attributes versus skills learned on the job, (2) balancing organizational stability and the need for change, (3) strategies for weaving teacher leader tenacity, vulnerability, and resilience into a sustainable professional lifestyle, (4) opportunities for intellectual sanctuaries that foster teacher leadership, and (5) understanding teacher leadership from a holistic personal versus discrete professional perspective.
