A Comprehensive Survey of the Intelligent Cyber Argumentation System with Social Networking: From Research Foundations to Development

Argumentation is one of the basic intelligent activities of humankind. Computational argumentation enables large-scale discussions using advanced computational and intelligent techniques. The growing interconnectedness among people across social networking and media platforms enables participation of a large number of people in argumentation on important topics in our society. Current social media and networking platforms serve as public forums for online deliberation on important topics, but they lack explicit representation of structured argumentation to handle large-scale discussions for decision-making. This leads to research and development of computational argumentation with social networking. One of the research threads within this area is the intelligent cyber argumentation system with social networking. This paper presents a comprehensive review of research and development of intelligent cyber argumentation system with social networking. Drawing on a curated selection of publications concerning the system’s research foundations, computational models, and implementation, this review traces its evolution over more than two decades beginning from 2003 to 2025. The research presented in this review paper covers many important research issues, such as intelligent argumentation, argumentation inference, collective opinions, argumentation polarization, outlier opinions in argumentation, stance prediction, opinion diversity, and impact of social networking on argumentation. This review will describe the integrated research framework, methods and algorithms for investigating these research issues, and the intelligent cyber argumentation system (ICAS) platform developed based on this research and the tools incorporated into it.
