Implementation of Discovery Learning Method on Enhancing Students’ Ability to Explore New Concepts in Natural Science Lessons: A Qualitative Study

This research examines the implementation of the discovery learning (DL) method to enhance students’ ability to explore new concepts in natural science lessons. The objective of this research is to determine the importance of the DL method and how it is implemented to improve students’ ability to explore new concepts in natural science lessons. This research used a qualitative method, with data collected through semi-structured interviews involving five (5) participants: one teacher and four students. The participants were selected using purposive sampling, and thematic analysis was used to analyse the data. The researcher validated the data through member checking. The results showed that implementing the DL method gives students opportunities to participate actively in exploring new concepts through observation, discussion and experimentation, allowing them to discover concepts for themselves. The DL method helps develop exploration skills, critical thinking, collaboration and independence. Although challenges arise, such as time limitations, a lack of materials and initial difficulties with activities, students can overcome these challenges with guidance and motivation from the teacher. Thus, the method can be used as a learning approach that provides opportunities for students to explore and discover new concepts in natural science lessons.
