Sobre o Livro “Semiose E Pensamento Humano: Registros Semióticos e Aprendizagem Intelectual” De Raymond Duval - Estudo Hermenêutico do Capítulo II
This text presents a hermeneutic study of Chapter II of Raymond Duval’s book “Semiosis and Human Thought: Semiotic Registers and Intellectual Learning,” which addresses the discursive functions of a language. The aim was to understand the role of language and discourse in mathematics learning, focusing on the cognitive operations involved in producing and understanding statements. The discussion addresses the metadiscursive functions of communication, processing, and objectification, as well as the discursive functions of reference, apophantic expression, discursive expansion, and reflexivity. The relationship between these functions and the development of mathematical thinking guided the study, considering that mathematical activity requires the coordination of natural language and other registers of semiotic representation. To discuss their implications for teaching, students’ written work on trigonometry and proportionality problems, drawn from Sabel (2021), was analyzed. The examples show how designations, justifications, and the connections between solution steps provide evidence of the knowledge mobilized and the procedures adopted. The study highlights the importance of valuing writing in mathematics classrooms as an activity that contributes to the development of thinking and enables teachers to interpret learning processes.
