CONTEMPORARY CHALLENGES FOR SPORT FOR HEALTH AND RECREATION IN BULGARIA

Sport for All is an inclusive approach to physical activity that prioritizes health, recreation, social participation, and well-being rather than competitive achievement. This synthesis examines the principal challenges affecting its development in Bulgaria, drawing on the source paper’s review of more than 80 publications, policy documents, and statistical and media sources, including 67 peer-reviewed studies. The analysis identifies interrelated barriers: limited media visibility for health-oriented activity, inconsistent participation habits, comparatively constrained public support for grassroots sport, uneven access to facilities, the strong cultural influence of elite sporting success, competition from digital entertainment, obesity and chronic health conditions, and the financial and time costs of participation. The evidence suggests that increasing participation requires coordinated action across public policy, education, local infrastructure, healthcare, families, sports organizations, and media. Digital tools may support activity when used as a means of access and learning rather than as a substitute for movement.
