Promoting Equitable and Inclusive Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports for Students With Extensive Support Needs

Positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) is a multi-tiered framework schools implement to meet the behavioral support needs of all students in a school. Although PBIS was designed as a fully inclusive framework, not all students with extensive support needs (ESN) access and benefit from the full spectrum of support offered through PBIS. In this special issue, scholars with expertise in PBIS share their perspectives and offer practical guidelines about how PBIS can be designed and implemented in equitable and inclusive ways to ensure all students, including those with ESN, meaningfully access and participate in PBIS.

Abstract

Positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) is a multi-tiered framework schools implement to meet the behavioral support needs of all students in a school. Although PBIS was designed as a fully inclusive framework, not all students with extensive support needs (ESN) access and benefit from the full spectrum of support offered through PBIS. In this special issue, scholars with expertise in PBIS share their perspectives and offer practical guidelines about how PBIS can be designed and implemented in equitable and inclusive ways to ensure all students, including those with ESN, meaningfully access and participate in PBIS.
