'Spaces of an Empire': Revisiting Space Syntax Analysis for Neo-Assyrian Palatial Architecture

This paper presents the application of Space Syntax Analysis to the architecture of Neo-Assyrian palaces. It shows how to apply the methods Space Syntax provides and what caveats the method has when used for ancient architecture. The results of this analysis validate the application of Space Syntax to Neo-Assyrian architecture, and while the results do align with the broader understanding of these structures by traditional interpretations, they also present new insights into the structure, potential movement and function embedded in the spatial layout of Neo-Assyrian palatial architecture.

Abstract

This paper presents the application of Space Syntax Analysis to the architecture of Neo-Assyrian palaces. It shows how to apply the methods Space Syntax provides and what caveats the method has when used for ancient architecture. The results of this analysis validate the application of Space Syntax to Neo-Assyrian architecture, and while the results do align with the broader understanding of these structures by traditional interpretations, they also present new insights into the structure, potential movement and function embedded in the spatial layout of Neo-Assyrian palatial architecture.
