High-temperature wear resistance of Ti–6Al–4V alloy with nanostructured TiN/CrN multilayer coatings

The effect of ion-plasma surface modification (IPM) in an Ar/N2 atmosphere and the deposition of cathodic-arc TiN and CrN coatings with different architectures on the mechanical and tribological properties of Ti–6Al–4V alloy was investigated at 20°C and 500°C. The best improvement in wear resistance was achieved by combining IPM with the deposition of a multilayer TiN/CrN coating with a modulation period of 10 nm. The for¬mation of a superlattice structure in the coating with a hardness of 29 GPa radically improves its tribological behavior: the friction coefficient decreases to 0.25 and 0.5, while the specific wear rate to 1x10–6 and 1.1x10–5 mm3/(N·m), respectively at 20°C and 500°C.
