Enhancing critical citizenship and intercultural awareness through reflective engagement in college social projects

The challenges of a globalized world are becoming more diverse and complex. College education offers opportunities for the formation of critical and socially responsible citizens. This study explores how students demonstrate appreciation for underrepresented communities and develop critical citizenship and intercultural awareness through reflection and active engagement while participating in socially oriented projects. Content analysis conducted on initial and final reflections, written by undergraduates at a university in Colombia, indicated their development from a passive understanding of cultural diversity to a more active engagement with marginalized communities. The results highlight that participation in social projects requiring reflection helps students develop greater empathy, critical thinking, and social engagement. This approach is a combination of theory and practice suitable for future professionals. The findings highlight the potential of these methodologies to foster more intercultural, inclusive, and equitable societies.
