Nanotoxicology: some results and problems of research in Russia

At present, the world is experiencing an intensive accumulation of knowledge about biological, hygienic, and environmental hazards, as well as the potential risk of exposure to nanomaterials that enter environmental objects, production areas, and residential zones. The safety of the application and use of nanomaterials is of particular concern to scientists and specialists in the fields of hygiene, occupational safety, and public health, since particles in the nanometer range constitute a significant fraction of aerosol pollution in atmospheric air (especially in cases of landscape fires and volcanic ash emissions) and in the air of workspaces in a number of industrial sectors.A wide range of fundamental research in the field of studying new properties of nanoparticles and nanomaterials, the search for new technologies for their production, and the expansion of application areas in key sectors of economic activity, including medicine, necessitates not only conducting ongoing assessments of the toxicity of nanoparticles and nanomaterials but also developing new methodological foundations for substantiating maximum permissible concentrations calculating the risk of toxicity and damage to health. One of the most important areas of nanotoxicology is the development of preventive measures related both to the protection of plant and animal life and, primarily, to the protection of the adult and child population and working people from their adverse effects. An important direction for implementing this area is the organization of unified medical and hygienic monitoring and risk analysis of the impact of nanomaterials on the health of the population and workers.Funding. Abstract
