THE PATHWAY FROM INHERITED TRADITIONS TO NEGOTIATED CHOICES: EXPLORING THE SOCIO-CULTURAL DYNAMICS RELATED TO MARRIAGE PERCEPTION AMONG UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN MULTAN, PAKISTAN
This study explored the socio-cultural dynamics shaping youth perceptions of marriage, focusing on how they navigate the required transition between inherited traditions and negotiated choices. The researchers used a triangulation method, combining quantitative and qualitative research designs. In addition, we surveyed N=400 unmarried students and conducted in-depth interviews with N=12 married university students using a self-administered questionnaire and interview guide for data collection. Multiple regression analysis showed that socio-cultural dynamics account for 87.2% of the variance in students' perceptions of marriage. The thematic analysis also identified six major themes shaping youth perceptions of marriage: negotiated marriage decision-making, family and cultural influence, digital media and contemporary marriage ideals, intergenerational negotiation and compromise, transforming partner-selection criteria, individual agency, and changing life priorities. In conclusion, the university students in the study area do not want to completely abandon their traditional values in spouse selection; rather, they want to negotiate to pursue their personal choice of marriage. Respecting children's spouse preferences, reducing gender pressure on females about marriage, and integrating family decisions, parental authority, and children's agreement can help develop a positive perception of marriage among university students in the study area.
