Time-Delay Effects in Networked Control Systems: A Review of Modeling and Compensation Approaches
In a networked control system (NCS), sensors, controllers and actuators exchange data over a shared communication network. The network introduces variable delay and packet loss that can degrade performance or destabilize an otherwise well-designed control loop. This review summarizes how delays are modeled, how their effect on stability is analyzed, and which compensation strategies are commonly used. We compare the approaches qualitatively and discuss open problems relevant to cyber-physical systems education and practice. No new experimental data are reported. An AI language model (Claude, Anthropic) was used in preparing this manuscript.
