Defining in plain language: towards an accessible dictionary
This paper explores the use of plain language in lexicographic definitions, supported by artificial intelligence, specifically ChatGPT, as a tool to improve dictionary accessibility. After a conceptual review of the evolution of definitions and their central role in dictionaries, the study analyzes a sample of 18 definitions from the Diccionario de la lengua española (DLE), reformulated by ChatGPT according to clarity criteria. The analysis reveals seven main simplification strategies: (a) replacing complex terms with simpler or paraphrased expressions; (b) eliminating cross-references; (c) avoiding synonymy as the only defining technique; (d) reducing lexical ambiguity; (e) expanding explanations through extended definitions; (f) developing, abbreviations and metalinguistic markers; and (g) including usage examples. These results suggest that artificial intelligence can significantly contribute to the creation of more understandable and accessible definitions, opening a line of work in the design of inclusive lexicographic resources, departing from traditional conventions.
