Scalable Gigapascal Strength Bamboo Veneers via Nanocellulose Reinforcement
Carbon neutrality demands materials that deliver both performance and low environmental impact. Carbon fiber and glass fiber rely on fossil feedstocks and energy-intensive processing, while nature bamboo the ecological marvel is limited by inefficient load transfer within their heterogeneous cell walls. Here we show that this limitation can be overcome by reprogramming the bamboo cell wall through supramolecular nano-reinforcement. Cellulose nanocrystals infiltrate the cell wall and promote the reorganization of the interfacial hydrogen-bonding network within the aligned cellulose framework converting structural discontinuities into a continuous load-bearing scaffold. This enhances interfibrillar stress transfer and homogenizes mechanical response across scales. The resulting material achieves a tensile strength of 0.98 GPa and a Young's modulus of 52.7 GPa, with specific strength rivaling many synthetic fiber materials. These gains are achieved with up to two orders of magnitude lower carbon intensity than that of carbon fiber. This work demonstrates a scalable route to transform abundant biomass into high-performance structural materials, decoupling mechanical performance from carbon intensity.
