The Rise of Cybercrimes with AI: Deepfakes

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning has enabled significant technological progress while simultaneously creating new avenues for cybercrime, particularly through deepfake-enabled fraud. The increasing sophistication and accessibility of AI-generated audio, images, and videos have facilitated identity impersonation, biometric manipulation, voice phishing, and financial scams targeting individuals and organisations. High-profile incidents, including the Arup deepfake fraud, demonstrate the substantial financial and operational risks associated with these emerging threats. This article examines the evolution, mechanisms, and implications of deepfake-enabled scams, with particular emphasis on financial fraud, social engineering, synthetic identity fraud, and the exploitation of publicly available digital media. It further explores common indicators of manipulated media, the limitations of conventional identity verification methods, and the growing importance of media forensics and AI-based detection systems. In the Indian context, the article considers regulatory developments and technological initiatives aimed at addressing synthetically generated information and strengthening digital safety. It also highlights practical preventive measures, including independent identity verification, emergency codewords, and public awareness, to mitigate the risks of impersonation and fraudulent requests. Ultimately, the article argues that combating deepfake-enabled fraud requires a coordinated approach integrating technological innovation, effective regulation, organizational safeguards, and individual vigilance to preserve trust and security in an increasingly AI-driven digital environment.
