How Beginners Actually Improve: Observed Patterns from the First Six Months of Chess Coaching
What happens, in practice, when a beginner starts chess coaching? This practitioner paper records the learning trajectory Superior Chess Academy's coaches observe in beginners' first six months, drawing on more than 30,000 hours of live coaching delivered to 1,000+ students aged 5 and above across 20+ countries. It describes the trial-class assessment and foundations stage, the tactics awakening of months two and three, and the consolidation of months four to six, when opening principles, slower games and first rated results reshape the student's play. It also reports the habits coaches observe separating steady improvers from students who stall. All findings are qualitative and practice-based, offered as practitioner experience rather than experimental results.
