How Adolescents Living in Juvenile Correctional Facilities Interpret Previous Adverse Childhood Experiences: Implications for Trauma‐Informed Social Work

ABSTRACT Despite the growing use of trauma‐informed practice (TIP) in social work, limited attention has been paid to how adolescents living in juvenile correctional facilities interpret their previous adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and how these interpretations relate to their engagement with psychosocial support. This study draws on 24 semi‐structured interviews with adolescents aged 15–18 living in three juvenile correctional facilities in the Czech Republic. The data were examined using situational analysis, with a focus on adolescents' meaning‐making processes. The analysis identified four meaning axes: uncertainty and fragile trust; threat and constant vigilance; the normalisation of violence and long‐term distress; and a shift from self‐blame towards recognition of the limits of personal responsibility. Relational patterns identified in adolescents' accounts of previous adversity were also reflected in their descriptions of institutional rules, staff conduct and the trustworthiness of the support offered. Their engagement was associated with experiences of predictable and respectful interactions with adults, transparent handling of information and continuity of relationships. The study supports an understanding of TIP not as a set of specialised interventions, but as an organisational approach embedded in everyday relationships, communication and practices within juvenile correctional facilities.
