Single‐Parameter Tuning Super‐Twisting Sliding Mode Control of Shunt Active Power Filter: Design and Experimental Validation

ABSTRACT The current control of shunt active power filters (SAPFs) remains a challenging task for improving overall system performance. This paper proposes a super‐twisting sliding mode current controller with single‐parameter tuning (SP‐STSMC) for a three‐phase SAPF. Unlike existing STSMC schemes, which require several gains to be tuned independently and typically operate in the dq frame with a phase‐locked loop (PLL), the proposed approach expresses both super‐twisting gains as functions of a single design parameter and employs two identical SP‐STSMC units directly in the stationary αβ frame. This eliminates the need for a PLL, simplifies the calculations, and minimizes the number of functional blocks required for implementation. The reference currents are generated using the instantaneous power (p‐q) theory, while the DC‐link voltage is regulated by a first‐order sliding mode controller. The proposed scheme operates at a constant switching frequency and ensures finite‐time convergence and robust current tracking under disturbances and parameter uncertainties. Its effectiveness is verified through simulations and experiments carried out on a dSPACE 1104 platform, under both transient and steady‐state conditions. Compared with conventional control techniques, the SP‐STSMC achieves a response time of 0.02 s and reduces the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the source currents from 23.39% to 0.57% in simulation and from 22.07% to 2.17% experimentally, in compliance with the IEEE 519 standard.
