Nikolaeva A.V., Silanov E.A. Distribution of authorial functions in digital games when using generative AI
This article deals with the transformation of authorship in digital games involving generative artificial intelligence. The existing studies consider generative models in game development separately from their use in gameplay and do not compare the distribution of authorial functions among the developer, player, and system. The material comprises documented cases of generative AI use in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, ARC Raiders, inZOI, and Where Winds Meet. The document and media analysis, comparative case analysis, and functional comparison have been applied in the study. Three generation modes are identified, i.e. production, user-driven, and dynamic. As generation moves closer to the unfolding gameplay event, the player gains greater capacity to initiate, specify, and actualize game content. Nevertheless, the developer retains control over the output and bears institutional responsibility for it. The generative model performs causal and operational functions in producing specific material, while the normative functions of authorship remain with the creative team.
