Meta-AI Physics: Mathematics as Constructed Intelligence and Time as the Origin of Artificial Intelligence
Recent commentary (Hossenfelder, 2026) notes that after mathematics, AI is now coming for physics — writing papers on new particles, dark matter, and the fine-structure constant. OpenAI claims progress on a major physics problem, but physicists argue it does not matter. We examine the deeper premise. We argue that mathematics itself satisfies the functional definition of Artificial Intelligence: a constructed, symbolic, compression-based intelligence that does not exist in nature but is projected onto nature. If mathematics is AI-1, then modern LLMs are AI2 extending AI-1, making AI dominance in physics inevitable and circular. We then propose an alternative ontological framework, Meta-AI Physics, within the P0 Theory (N0 substrate at dT = 0). In this framework, time is not emergent from nature; nature (including spacetime gμν ) is emergent from a pre-spatiotemporal substrate N0 via condensation of virtual quanta (nothons, N o) at a fluctuation point P0. Under this view, time is the condition that permitted both natural law and intelligence (human and artificial) to arise, allowing intelligence to extend control over physics and pursue a Theory of Everything. This reframes the question from “Can AI do physics?” to “Is physics itself inside something larger that neither mathematics nor current AI can reach?”
