The Smoothness Defect: S₈, Priced at Half Its Quoted Value

The universe's clumpiness has two tables, and for a decade they disagreed. S₈ = σ₈(Ω_m/0.3)^{1/2} measures how strongly matter has clustered. The early universe's table — the cosmic microwave background, read through the ΛCDM model — gives S₈ = 0.832 ± 0.013 (Planck 2018), a value not measured at late times but *derived*: the fluctuations seen at redshift 1100, grown forward thirteen billion years by the model's own growth equations. The late universe's tables — weak gravitational lensing surveys weighing the clustering directly — clustered for years at 0.759–0.776: KiDS-1000 at 0.759 (2.8σ below Planck), DES Year 3 at 0.776 (2.6σ), HSC Year 3 at 0.776 (1.6σ). A defect of nearly three sigma, quoted everywhere as cosmology's second great tension. This paper prices it — and the price has moved. In 2025 the HSC collaboration's redshifts were recalibrated against DESI spectroscopy, and HSC's S₈ moved from 0.769 to 0.805 ± 0.018: one assumed step — the photometric-redshift calibration — was worth +0.036 in S₈, nearly three times Planck's whole error bar, and it carried the tension from 2σ down to 1.2σ without a single new photon of lensing data. KiDS's final Legacy analysis now reports consistency with Planck within one sigma, while DES Year 6 still sits at 0.794, 2.3σ low: the two flagship lensing pipelines currently disagree with *each other* about whether the defect exists. The defect is real, shrinking under recalibration, and roughly half its quoted size was calibration, priced here line by line. Grade: DEFECT STANDS AT HALF PRICE — PARTIALLY RETIRED BY RECALIBRATION, THE REST PRICED. This paper stands outside my work on the vacuum catastrophe; it draws nothing from that work and repairs nothing in it, and it claims nothing about the vacuum program — quantum gravity stands not solved in my books, and clustering tensions move it not at all.
