Dynamics of Agricultural Engineering in Spain: Analysis of the Situation in Empty Spain

The agri-food sector is one of the most important industries in the Spanish economy and requires highly qualified professionals capable of addressing technical, environmental, and productive challenges. This study aimed to analyse the evolution of Agricultural Engineering education in Spain through a longitudinal descriptive analysis covering the 2015–2016 to 2024–2025 academic years. The study included undergraduate and first-year enrolment, available places, occupancy rates, graduates, gender distribution, institutional distribution, and the role of the qualifying master’s degree in Agricultural Engineering, while also considering the regional case of Castilla y León. Data were obtained from the Integrated University Information System. The results showed a recovery in undergraduate enrolment and first-year enrolment after several years of decline, with occupancy rates exceeding 100% in 2024–2025. However, this recovery has not yet been reflected in the number of bachelor’s graduates or in a substantial reduction in the gender gap, as women remain under-represented at undergraduate level. At postgraduate level, enrolment and the number of graduates increased among universities offering the qualifying master’s degree, confirming its growing importance within the professional training pathway. The analysis also revealed a predominantly public university structure, together with marked regional and institutional differences. These findings highlight the need to improve educational planning, gender balance, and student progression in Agricultural Engineering education in Spain.
