The Most Common Mistakes Beginners Make: Patterns from Thousands of Coached Games
Beginners do not make random mistakes. They make the same mistakes, in the same ways, with remarkable consistency. This practitioner paper catalogues the recurring error patterns Superior Chess Academy's coaches observe in beginner games, drawing on more than 30,000 hours of live coaching delivered to 1,000+ students aged 5 and above across 20+ countries. It describes six patterns: hanging pieces, moving without a threat-check, neglecting king safety, playing too fast, memorizing openings without understanding them, and hiding losses instead of reviewing them. For each it records why the pattern persists and what correction actually works. All findings are qualitative and practice-based, offered as practitioner experience rather than experimental results.
