BRILIAN optimisation toolkit (1st version) D4.4.

This deliverable presents the first version of the BRILIAN Optimisation Toolkit, developed to support the design and assessment of sustainable bio-based value chains. The toolkit is intended primarily for primary producers, cooperatives and agro-industries, while also supporting researchers, technology developers, industrial actors and policymakers in evaluating the feasibility and sustainability of bio-based initiatives. The toolkit integrates two complementary dimensions: biomass resource and logistics optimisation, and environmental and social performance assessment. The logistics component evaluates feedstock potential and availability, collection and pre-treatment requirements, transport costs and supply configurations. The environmental and social component applies a simplified Life Cycle Assessment approach to evaluate relevant sustainability indicators, including climate change, eutrophication, water and fossil resource depletion, energy demand and social aspects. To support decision-making, the toolkit combines the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) with AI-based spatial modelling, allowing different technical, economic, environmental and social criteria to be considered when identifying suitable value-chain configurations and potential locations for intermediate biomass processing facilities. Scenario and sensitivity analyses also enable users to explore the effects of different assumptions and local conditions. Overall, the BRILIAN Optimisation Toolkit provides a flexible decision-support framework for assessing biomass availability, logistics feasibility and sustainability performance. It aims to help stakeholders identify opportunities for new bio-based business lines, improve existing value chains and support the replication of sustainable and cooperative bio-based business models across different European regions.
